Washington Crossing The Delaware Trenton NJ

WASHINGTON CROSSING The DELAWARE

TRENTON,NEW JERSEY

WASHINGTON CROSSING The DELAWARE

On the night of December 25–26, 1776General George Washington led the Continental Army across the ice-choked Delaware River in a daring surprise attack against Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey. This maneuver was a desperate bid to revive the failing American Revolution after a series of crushing defeats in New York.

The Historic Event
The crossing was the first phase of a complex plan intended to involve three separate river crossings. However, extreme weather—a nor'easter featuring freezing rain, snow, and sleet—prevented the other two columns from reaching New Jersey.
  • The Forces: Washington led approximately 2,400 soldiers, along with 18 cannons and horses, across the river.
  • The Vessels: While often depicted in small rowboats, the army primarily used large, flat-bottomed Durham boats (40–60 feet long) and ferries to transport heavy equipment.
  • The Outcome: Despite being three hours behind schedule, the Continental Army successfully surprised and defeated the Hessian garrison at the Battle of Trenton on the morning of December 26.
  • Impact: The victory, followed by successes at Assunpink Creek and Princeton, boosted morale and secured Washington's leadership, saving the revolution from collapse.
The Iconic Painting
The most famous depiction of this event is the 1851 painting by Emanuel Leutze, which is currently on display at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. While historically significant as a symbol of American resilience, it contains several intentional inaccuracies:
  • The Boat: Leutze depicts a small rowboat rather than the massive Durham boats actually used.
  • The Flag: The "Stars and Stripes" shown in the painting was not adopted until June 1777, six months after the crossing.
  • The Stance: Washington is shown standing heroically; in reality, such a stance would have likely capsized the boat in the treacherous, icy conditions.
  • The Figures: The boat includes a diverse cross-section of the colonies, including an African American man and figures representing different backgrounds, symbolizing national unity.

Andy Warhol Pop Art Explained

ANDY WARHOL

"The KING of POP ART"

ANDY WARHOL & His CAMPBELL'S SOUP CANS

Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans (1962) is a seminal Pop Art series of 32 canvases  — one for each variety available at the time—that revolutionized art by elevating a mundane, mass-produced consumer product into fine art. Exhibited linearly to mimic a grocery store shelf, the works reflected post-war American culture, consumerism, and Warhol’s interest in repetition, utilizing a mechanical, silkscreen-like process to challenge traditional ideas of artistic originality.
Key Aspects of Warhol and His Soup Cans:
  • The 1962 Series: The original series of 32 paintings, which now resides in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), was first exhibited at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles in 1962.
  • Method: While sometimes thought to be purely printed, the 1962 cans were largely hand-painted or hand-stamped, although they adopted a sterile, commercial appearance that removed traces of the artist's hand.
  • Inspiration: Warhol, who was a successful commercial illustrator before becoming a fine artist, chose soup cans because he wanted to paint something that represented American consumer culture, famously noting he had the same lunch for 20 years.
  • Impact: The paintings shocked the art world, which was then dominated by Abstract Expressionism, by focusing on "low-brow" advertising imagery rather than emotional, personal expression.
  • Further Variations: Warhol later produced Campbell's Soup Cans I (1968) and II (1969), which were screen prints that fully embraced the mechanical, mass-production style.
  • Legacy: The soup cans cemented Warhol as a leader of the Pop Art movement and transformed commercial logos into enduring art icons.

TURQUOISE MARILYN

1964

ANDY WARHOL'S "TURQUOISE MARILYN"

"Turquoise Marilyn" refers to Any Warhol's iconic 1964 Pop Art Portrait of Marilyn Monroe. This specific silkscreen painting is part of a series Warhol created using different background colors, with the turquoise version being one of the most famous and highly valued.

The painting features Warhol's signature Pop Art style using high-contrast silkscreen printing to layer vivid colors over a publicity photo from the 1953 film Niagara. This specific version is noted for its striking turquoise background, lemon-yellow hair, and bright pink skin tones.

Andy Warhol’s Turquoise Marilyn (1964) is one of the iconic "Shot Marilyns" and was reportedly sold privately in 2007 to hedge fund manager Steven Cohen for an estimated $80 Million US dollars.
As one of the premier 40"x40" Shot Marilyn paintings, it remains among the most valuable artworks in the world, with similar canvases fetching nearly $200 million by 2022.
Key Facts Regarding "Shot" Marilyn Values:
  • Turquoise Marilyn : Sold to Steven Cohen in 2007 for a rumored $80 million.
  • Shot Sage Blue Marilyn: Sold for $195 million in May 2022, setting the record for the highest price for an American artist at auction.
  • Orange Marilyn: Sold privately for roughly $200 million in 2018. The Turquoise painting is famous for being the only painting in the series to escape being struck by bullets when a performance artist shot at the canvases stacked in Warhol's studio.

Warhol actually painted five colored Marilyns in 1964 with different colored backgrounds: red, orange, light blue, sage blue, and turquoise and he stored them at The Factory, his studio on East 47th Street in Manhattan. Dorothy Podber (1932–2008), a friend of Factory photographer Billy Name, saw the recently completed paintings stacked against one another at the studio and asked Warhol if she could shoot them. Believing that she meant she wanted to photograph the paintings, Warhol agreed. Podber doffed her pair of black gloves, withdrew a small revolver from her purse, and fired a shot into the stack of four "Marilyn" paintings, which became known as The Shot Marilyns. (The fifth painting with the turquoise background was not in the stack.)
